Book Review – Moby Dick

By in Uncategorized

It’s boring.

Well it’s not that bad but it does read like a text book. So far I’ve ready about four hundred pages about Whale Biology (which I have a sneaking suspicion is a little dated) and about 50 on actual whaling. Luckily 20 of those pages actually included the titular character.

In case you didn’t know, Moby Dick is the story of Captain Ahab and his hunt for the elusive Sperm Whale, Moby Dick. Dick has taken Ahab’s leg in their last encounter and Ahab swore revenge on the whale. It is a story of man vs nature and how obsession can come to rule one’s life. Also, if it had more explosions, it would make a perfect Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

I think that I probably shouldn’t have attempted reading this book on the bus as it requires a bit of effort on the part of the reader to be involved in the story. It is a difficult book and is probably worthwile reading if you are into classical literature. I think maybe reading a few essays on the book may change my opinon on it. This is a book that you don’t really read so much as study. In a few years, I will give this book another shot.

If you’re looking for another classic, try The Count of Monte Cristo.
